WakeMed Key Community Care ACO and Blue Cross NC Collaboration Improves Care

We are pleased to share great news regarding positive results of the WakeMed Accountable Care Organization (ACO), Wake Key Community Care.
  • What is an ACO? Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers, who come together voluntarily to give coordinated high quality care to their Medicare patients. The goal of coordinated care is to ensure that patients, especially the chronically ill, get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors.
  • Why an ACO? WakeMed and all hospitals are often asked how we are working to lower healthcare costs.  The results of our ACO partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC and other healthcare providers in the Triangle is a perfect example of how WakeMed is yielding better patient outcomes and improving health of our community, all while driving down the cost of healthcare.
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC and WakeMed Key Community Care began our ACO partnership in July 2014 to improve the delivery of health care services while reducing overall costs for a segment of Wake County patients on Medicare.  The partnership has delivered on these goals. “Three years into their accountable care organization (ACO) collaboration to enhance health care quality and value, WakeMed Key Community Care (WKCC) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) have achieved measurable improvements in the coordination of care and overall cost, resulting in the reduction of unnecessary costs by nearly $20 million.”
