Garner Road Sewer Improvement Project to Require Eastbound Closure
The City of Raleigh is starting a project to replace the sewer line along Garner Road from Cofield Alley to just east of New Rand Road. During recent preliminary work, Raleigh Water discovered that the project will not be able to be completed using a normal flagging operation.
Instead, Raleigh Water must close Garner Road starting May 6 to eastbound traffic for the duration of the project (motorists may already have seen message boards in the area of the work communicating this information).
According to a news release issued by the City of Raleigh on April 25, the "closure is expected to last for three months, though work schedules are subject to change based on weather and other factors."
The City of Raleigh intends to implement the following detour plan (also see map below):
- Traffic traveling east on Garner Road will exit onto Benson Road south and turn left to enter U.S. 70 traveling east. Traffic will then exit at New Rand Road and turn left to travel on New Rand Road traveling north. Traffic will then turn right on East Garner Road traveling east.
- Traffic traveling west on Garner Road will not detour and will continue traveling west on Garner Road on one lane open through the work zone.
- Traffic traveling south from Avery Street/Cedar Lane/Center Street/Cofield Alley/Harper Street/Penny Street/Creech Road/Garner Recreational Park/Garner Senior Center/Chadwick Apartments/Hayes Chapel Christian Church toward Garner Road will turn right onto Garner Road traveling west.
City of Raleigh water and sewer customers in the area should not experience any interruption of services. If an interruption occurs, impacted customers will be notified by Raleigh Water staff by phone call, property visit and/or doorhanger.
